How do you troubleshoot a bird-caging wire rope on a tower crane hoist?

CQ-009 · Troubleshooting
Immediately stop crane operations and replace the wire rope. Bird-caging indicates core failure and creates an unsafe lifting condition.
Bird-caging occurs when the wire rope's core fails, causing the outer strands to balloon outward and separate from the core. This creates a dangerous condition where the rope can no longer support its rated load capacity. Upon detecting bird-caging, immediately cease all crane operations and lower any suspended loads using extreme caution.
Reference: ASME B30.5 Mobile and Locomotive Cranes standard for wire rope inspection and replacement criteria
Remember: STOP-SWAP: Stop operations immediately, Swap the wire rope (bird-caging = core failure = unsafe)
