Why is side loading considered the most common cause of boom failure?

CQ-016 · Safety
Side loading creates lateral forces that exceed the boom's design limits, causing structural failure since crane booms are engineered primarily for vertical loads.
Side loading occurs when the load pulls the boom sideways rather than straight down, creating dangerous lateral forces that crane booms are not designed to handle. Unlike vertical loads that compress the boom structure as intended, side loads create bending moments and torsional stresses that can exceed the boom's structural capacity by orders of magnitude.
