What is the D/d ratio and why does it matter for wire rope sling capacity?

RIG-002 · Rigging
The D/d ratio compares sheave diameter (D) to wire rope diameter (d). Higher ratios increase sling capacity and rope life.
The D/d ratio is the relationship between the sheave or block diameter (D) and the wire rope diameter (d). This ratio directly affects wire rope strength and working load limits. As wire rope bends around smaller sheaves, it experiences higher internal stresses that reduce its load capacity.
Reference: ASME B30.9 Slings standard
Remember: "Big D, little d - Bigger ratio = Better capacity and rope life"
