When should you use a spreader bar instead of an equalizer beam?

RIG-502 · Rigging
Use spreader bars for wider load distribution and when the load needs to clear obstacles. Use equalizer beams for uneven loads requiring automatic load balancing.
Spreader bars are the preferred choice when you need to distribute lifting forces across a wider area of the load, preventing damage to delicate or thin materials like steel plates, precast panels, or long structural beams. They maintain a fixed geometry and keep sling legs at predetermined angles, which is crucial when the load must clear obstacles during the lift or when precise load positioning is required.
Reference: ASME B30.9 Rigging Hardware Standard
Remember: "SPREAD Wide & Clear, EQUAL Uneven" - Spreader bars for width/clearance, Equalizer beams for load balancing.
